Moving to Spain for work or study is an exciting journey, but it comes with its share of paperwork. One crucial document you’ll need for your visa application is an ACRO Police Check. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explain what it is, why you need it, and how to get it right the first time.

What is an ACRO Police Check?

An ACRO Police Check is a criminal background certificate issued by the ACRO Criminal Records Office in the UK. It provides details of any convictions, warnings, or reprimands on your record.

Why Do You Need It for Spain?

If you’re applying for certain types of Spanish visas—such as work, study, or residency visas—you must prove you have no significant criminal record. This requirement ensures applicants meet Spain’s immigration standards.

For more detailed information, visit the ACRO Criminal Records Office and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs websites.

When is an ACRO Certificate Required?

Not all types of visas require an ACRO Police Check. Below is a breakdown:

  • Required For:
    • Work visas (e.g., employment contracts).
    • Study visas (e.g., university enrolment).
    • Residency visas, such as Golden Visa.
  • Not Required For:
    • Short-term tourist visas.

Check your visa type on the Spanish Consulate’s website to confirm requirements.

How to Apply for an ACRO Police Certificate

Step 1: Fill out the Application Form Online

Go to the ACRO website and fill out the Police Certificate application form online. It must be completed digitally on the official ACRO Criminal Records website, paper-based forms are no longer accepted.

Step 2: Gather Your Supporting Documents

Prepare the following:

  • Coloured passport-style photos: Recent and meeting passport photo standards.
  • Proof of ID: Valid passport, driving licence, or national ID card.
  • Proof of address: Utility bill, bank statement, or council tax statement (dated within the last three months).
  • Additional documents: Power of Attorney or authorisation documents (if applicable).

Step 3: Submit Your Application

Fill out the delivery address and make the payment by debit or credit card. Once these two steps are completed, you submit the application form online and will receive the email confirmation.

How Long Does It Take to Process?

The processing time depends on the delivery method:

  • Standard Service: Up to 30 working days for processing.
  • Premium Service: Up to 2 working days for processing.  The Premium service is no longer available from ACRO.
  • Delivery Times:
    • UK: up to 8 postal days.
    • Europe: 10 postal days.
    • International: 20 postal days.

If you need your certificate urgently, ensure all documents are correctly completed to avoid delays and appoint Westminster Legalisation Services to assist with the Apostille legalisation and sworn translation services, as applicable.

How much does an ACRO Cost?

The cost for a standard ACRO police certificate is £70 for a standard service (up to 30 working days).
As of summer 2026, ACRO is no longer offering the premium service with 2 working days’ service.

These prices are for the certificate itself, and additional costs may apply if you need other services, such as an apostille or certified translation.

What is an International Child Protection Certificate (ICPC)?

If you’re planning to work with children in Spain, you’ll need an International Child Protection Certificate (ICPC). This document was developed by ACRO and the National Crime Agency to prevent offenders in the UK from working with children abroad.

How to Apply for an ICPC

The process is similar to obtaining a Police Certificate but requires an employment letter or contract as an additional document. Visit the ICPC page on ACRO for more details.

People Also Ask

What is the Difference Between an ACRO Police Check and a DBS Police Check?

An ACRO Police Check is used for international purposes, such as visa applications for Spain, while a DBS Police check is primarily for employment in the UK, despite some countries still accepting this type of criminal records certificate for immigration purposes.

Can I Get an ACRO Certificate with a Criminal Record?

Yes, you can. However, you must disclose all past convictions. Minor offences may not prevent you from obtaining a visa, but honesty is essential.

How Much Does an ACRO Police Check Cost?

Costs vary depending on the service level (standard or premium). Check the latest fees on the ACRO website.

What Happens if My Application is Incomplete?

Incomplete applications will be delayed. Ensure all forms and documents are accurate and correctly formatted before submission.
